Stihl FSA 135 R Review: A Pro-Grade Battery Trimmer Built for Crews

Stihl FSA 135 R String Trimmer Review

Stihl took its proven FS 91 R gas trimmer and gave it a battery-powered heart, resulting in the FSA 135 R — a pro-level cordless trimmer that feels instantly familiar to landscapers and maintenance crews. Built with the same chassis and ergonomics as its gas counterpart, this trimmer is aimed squarely at professionals looking to transition away from two-stroke engines without compromising on performance.

The FSA 135 R runs at a top speed of 5900 RPM across three selectable modes. During testing, it clocked in at just under 5800 RPM with a 0.105-inch line, giving it the muscle to cut through thick turf and edging work. It’s not as aggressive as heavy hitters like the Makita GRU07 or Milwaukee M18 Fuel 3006, but it’s more than enough for day-to-day maintenance tasks.

Runtime with the AP 300 S (7.2Ah) battery averaged 23.5 minutes, which is respectable for a Pro model but still on the shorter side compared to lighter-duty residential trimmers.

Ergonomics and Balance

Where this trimmer really shines is ergonomics. At 14.8 lbs with battery, it’s on the heavy side, but the weight distribution is excellent — just a slight rear bias that makes it easy to swing without constant arm fatigue. Paired with low vibration levels (second only to Husqvarna in our tests), this is one of the most comfortable pro trimmers you can run all day.

If weight is an issue, Stihl offers belt and backpack battery adapters that shift the load off the tool, making it far easier to handle for extended jobs.

Head and Line System

By default, the FSA 135 R ships with a manual-loading dual-line head, which feels like a step back for a tool at this price point. Stihl’s newer AutoCut C EasySpool head is a much-needed upgrade, and you’ll want to confirm with your dealer whether your unit ships with it. Swapping to the EasySpool dramatically reduces reload time in the field.

Price and Value

At $449 bare tool or around $860 as a kit with the AP 300 S battery, this is one of the more expensive cordless trimmers available. But what you’re paying for is dealer support, Pro-grade construction, and the confidence of Stihl’s service network. For commercial crews, that after-sale backing is worth the premium.

Bottom Line

The Stihl FSA 135 R is best seen as a battery-powered workhorse for professionals already running Stihl gear. It’s built tough, runs smooth, and has the ergonomics that crews demand — even if it comes at a higher cost and heavier weight. If you need raw cutting power above all else, Makita or Milwaukee may be better bets. But if you’re after comfort, balance, and long-term dealer support, this is one of the best Pro-grade battery trimmers you can buy.
